The intention behind this project is to create a tribute to 70s/80s/90s horror movies, particularly the campy and blackly funny schlock they are often remembered for. The zine will contain horror, but is not aiming to terrify so much as thrill. This is an original project, which means we won't be borrowing any direct elements from specific films. We're going to create a new story!Once contributors are accepted, people's preferences will be taken into account to shape a killer central to the story - this will also be when we find out whether this zine leans closer to a dusty desert slaughterfest with grime under its nails, or the cold buzz of a video store with something staring out from around the counter. We will try to shape the setting and frame of the story to fit contributor preferences as much as possible. After this has been decided, each of our writers will be able to create their own character, and artists will be given a chance to flesh out either the cast or the world they occupy.

Interested in applying as a writer? We want to see examples of short stories especially, as well as sections from longer works. Your total word count across samples should top out around 6000 words max. Horror writing is especially encouraged in portfolios, and we strongly suggest putting an original piece as your first sample (of three).

Interested in applying as an artist? Character artists will need to show they can draw full-body coloured artwork of people. Illustrators, who'll create spot art and a limited number of full art pages, will need a portfolio that demonstrates good background work and/or character interaction. We are also planning to take on merch artists, for both digital and (if stretch goals are met) physical merch.

Q: How old do I need to be to apply?
A: You'll need to be eighteen or over when you submit the form.
Q: Is this zine going to be sfw?
A: The zine will undoubtedly feature blood and violence, though our intention is to portray this in a more blackly comic than horrific way. The zine will not contain any detailed sexual content.
Q: Will this zine be free or for profit?
A: Based on our interest check, we are aiming to release a physical edition of the finished zine. We will also have a small number of physical merch stretch goals, more generally based on a classic horror aesthetic. The profit from these sales will go to providing free copies to our contributors. If there is money left over after sales end, this will be distributed among the contributors and mods as payment.
Q: Do I need to know a lot about old horror movies to apply?
A: We promise not to go film snob on you! So long as you have an interest in the general area of horror movies, there are no qualifiers for applying. It's an original project, after all.
Q: I have a different question!
A: Hit that email button below and ask us! Or, send us an ask on tumblr. We'll get it answered for you.

The last project produced by Vinegar Zines - What Should We Do With Your Body? - was a mystery story about a murder in a small town.
The zine was highly collaborative. It involved 15 writers, 15 character artists, and 10 spot artists. You can read it for free, and discover why a body was found inside a mountain mineshaft above a dying town, here.
The first project produced by Vinegar Zines - PARANORMALCY - was a cryptozoology and folklore zine that was sold during 2021. It is no longer available, but the Cryptid Guide Booklet, featuring lore surrounding the creatures from the zine, can be viewed for free here.
